Bio

photo Guy Tremblay

Guy Tremblay practises his art for now more than forty years. Professional artist for about thirty years, he is an autodidact and holds a Superior Study Diploma in Contemporary Art Practices. He also took part in several workshops with Masters of contemporary photography such as Mary Ellen Mark, Arnold Newman and Bruce Davidson. He also much involved himself in the artistic community, initially in Ottawa with Gallery 101 then as of his arrival in the Eastern Townships with the P'tit Bonheur of St-Camille, he organized the Mois de la Photo à St-Camille during seven years. In the last years, Guy Tremblay as also committed himself with young people by teaching on a volunteer basis his art to teenagers in collaboration with the Association des groupes jeunesse de l'Or Blanc and the Coalition Sherbrookoise pour le travail de rue. He received up to now, four grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec. The art of Guy Tremblay was presented in more than 30 solos or of group shows. Its photographs belong to several public and private collections in Canada, the United States, France and Cuba.

The art of Guy Tremblay alternates between the landscape and the portrait. He generally concentrates on a single series at once. Certain series can however spread out over several years such as its series of landscapes. He chose black and white photography for aesthetic reasons and because he controls the process from the shooting until the processing of the final prints. With a direct and meticulous style, he avoids distracting with special effects. The black and white allows him a level of abstraction from the reality which leads the observer to consider the world in a new way. Its work is sober, contemplative and meditative. It is a research of extraordinary in the ordinary, of the true beauty. It is not so much the decisive moment than the environment and the quality of the light which inspires him. In a time of the digital photography, he still uses the gelatine silver print for its unequalled qualities. In addition to traditional gelatine silver print photography, he has been specializing for several years in platinum and palladium printing.
